After recently reviewing the NSW Planning white paper, \u00a0it struck me how many times the words economic viability or economic feasibility were mentioned and how little mention there were of other contemporary planning terms, that relate to social and environmental considerations such as Urban Design, Liveability and Natural Resources. So I conducted a subjective word count to discover the following interesting facts:<\/p>\n

The white paper ‘word count’ presented the following results:<\/strong><\/p>\n

economic – 82<\/p>\n

natural resources – 7<\/p>\n

urban design – 1<\/p>\n

liveability – 1<\/p>\n

landscape – 4<\/p>\n

neighbourhood – 13<\/p>\n

heritage – 14<\/p>\n

streetscape – 1<\/p>\n

architecture – 0<\/p>\n

engineering – 1<\/p>\n

fire – 110<\/p>\n

flood – 9<\/p>\n

accessibility – 12<\/p>\n

seniors \/retirement living – 1<\/p>\n

There is no doubt that this document is a big body of work which covers a lot of ground and considers many of the complex components which need to be addressed, in order to have a planning system that resembles some sort of orchestrated\u00a0process. However if this state is still pursuing sustainable development, then the social and environmental considerations need to be factored in equally with the economic considerations.
